UAW Acting President Leads 5th Annual Sleeping Bag Drive to Help Detroit Homeless

UAW Acting President Rory Gamble will lead a community effort to deliver sleeping bags and winter necessities to homeless residents in the Detroit area.

On Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019, the Bed in a Bag Radiothon will be broadcast live from 8 to 10 a.m. on the Mildred Gaddis radio show on 105.9 KISS-FM from McDonalds at 1000 Mack Avenue in Detroit.  Volunteers will deliver sleeping bags, hats, socks and other cold-weather necessities directly to homeless residents. The bags are designed to handle temperatures as low as 17 degrees below zero.

“This event makes a real difference for people in the community who need these items,” said Gamble. “It is amazing to see all the volunteers who show up. It warms the hearts of everyone who participates, and it fills a real need during these cold winter months for people living on the streets of Detroit,” Gamble said.

Gamble has been the leading sponsor of this sleeping bag drive for the homeless four  consecutive years. This year the event is conducted in partnership with the EMG Foundation.

To volunteer, or for more information call 313 568-1059. Volunteers should dress warmly to help with distribution. Checks or money orders toward the purchase of a sleeping bag should be made payable to EMG Foundation and delivered to The Beasley Group, 1 Radio Plaza St., Ferndale, Michigan 48220.
